At the Bookstore

I found the December 1948 issue of AMAZING STORIES in the nostalgia section at Half Price Books today. They had it marked for $5.00, but since there was a 20% off sale going on, it only cost me four bucks. Even though it's not a great issue, contents-wise, I'm very glad to have it. I left there a happy camper.

I love finds like these. One of the all-time great pulps. James, you will have to tell us whether the Red Dwarf or the Sorcerer Queen wins!

Oh, that is a nice find indeed.

When I saw that 20% sale at Half Price Books I had to go buck wild. I bought a lot of DVDs though. Some Hammer stuff (can't go wrong with Hammer Films) and the Lou Ferrigno Hercules film (I'm sucker for that kind of silliness).

But that store has become my favorite one stop shop for awesome. I've found all sorts of tie-in novels and old horror novels that I just had to have. Great place. My best find was a small press Kolchak: The Night Stalker novel title Grave Secrets. I literally squeal with joy when I saw that on the shelf.

Now this one got my attention right away because of the Richard Shaver stuff. Shaver was a fascinating person (for an obvious textbook paranoid schizophrenic), and I really found some of his stuff dementedly inspired. I would really love to see a future collection of the unhinged, unedited Shaver stuff, including the details that Raymond Palmer edited out: his sadomasochism, for instance.
